Microsoft-backed OpenAI Utilizes Reddit Data for AI Training

OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, has unveiled a collaboration with Reddit aimed at enhancing its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. The partnership, announced entails the utilization of Reddit's data and content to train ChatGPT and other OpenAI offerings. Central to this agreement is the integration of Reddit's application programming interface (API), the conduit through which Reddit disseminates its content.

Following Reddit's recent collaboration with Alphabet, valued at approximately $60 million annually, to provide its content for training Google's AI models, the OpenAI-Reddit agreement emerges. This partnership underscores Reddit's endeavor to expand beyond its advertising sector, aiming for diversification.

Earlier this year, Reddit made its debut on the New York Stock Exchange. The platform has been actively exploring ways to leverage the rich discussions within its diverse groups to enhance its revenue streams. Following the announcement of the OpenAI partnership, Reddit's shares surged by 12% in after-hours trading.

"Reddit has become one of the internet's largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything," Reddit Chief Executive Steve Huffman said in a joint release. "We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with uniquely timely and relevant information and to explore the possibilities to enrich the Reddit experience with AI-powered features”, said Brad Lightcap, OpenAI COO.

In unrelated developments, reports suggest that OpenAI may be utilizing content from Google's YouTube platform to train its AI model, Sora. OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, recently informed the Wall Street Journal that she couldn't confirm whether Sora specifically incorporates YouTube videos and content into its training regimen. Murati emphasized that OpenAI's AI model draws from publicly accessible data sources as well as licensed data.

Responding to reports, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that Google would ‘sort it out’ if OpenAI actually relied on YouTube videos. “Look, I think it’s a question for them to answer”, Pichai said, “I don’t have anything to add. We do have clear terms of service. And so, you know, I think normally in these things we engage with companies and make sure they understand our terms of service. And we’ll sort it out”, he added.
