Modi Inspires Google to Harness AI for India: Sundar Pichai

In aIn a recent CEOs’ roundtable with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, expressed deep admiration for the Prime Minister’s vision of employing artificial intelligence (AI) to address critical societal challenges in India. Pichai highlighted Google’s substantial investment in AI initiatives within the country and its commitment to further capital infusion into India’s growing tech ecosystem.

Commenting on Modi’s ambitious 'Digital India' initiative, Pichai remarked, “PM Modi has urged us to continue manufacturing and designing in India. We take pride in producing our Pixel phones here”. He emphasized Modi's forward-thinking approach to leveraging technology for national transformation, noting, “He is genuinely considering how AI can reshape the country for the benefit of its citizens”.

Pichai discussed Modi’s call for tech leaders to create AI applications across multiple sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and energy. He stated, “We are making significant investments in AI in India and look forward to expanding our efforts. We have initiated several programs in collaboration with MeitY, the agriculture and health ministries, as well as central and state governments”.

Acknowledging Modi's persistent encouragement for the tech industry to boost its contributions to India's progress, Pichai commented, “PM Modi has consistently challenged us to do more for India. Now, he's asking us to extend this mindset to AI. He has a clear vision regarding the potential AI holds and how it can benefit the populace.”

This meeting followed Modi’s address to the Indian diaspora, where he expressed his ambition for India to become a technology leader. After discussions with 15 CEOs from various sectors, Modi shared his optimism on social media, noting the 'immense optimism towards India'.

Furthermore, Pichai announced the establishment of a $120 million ‘Global AI Opportunity Fund’ designed to make AI education and training accessible in communities worldwide.

At the 'UN Summit of the Future,' Pichai reflected on his upbringing in Chennai and the significant influence of technology on his life. He recalled having limited access to computers during his childhood, stating, “When I arrived in the US for graduate school, I found labs filled with machines available for use at any time. This access to computing motivated me to pursue a career focused on bringing technology to more people”.

With Modi’s vision guiding his efforts, Pichai foresees a future where AI plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for millions across India.
