NevilleNeville Tata, 32, has assumed leadership at Star Bazaar, marking a generational shift within the Tata Group’s retail segment. Star Bazaar, the hypermarket unit of Trent Ltd., represents one of the Tata Group’s key retail ventures. Neville, son of Trent Ltd. chairman Noel Tata and half-brother of Tata Group patriarch Ratan Tata, is stepping into a more prominent role after previously serving as a non-executive director on the board of Trent Hypermarket.

Insiders familiar with the development shared that Neville has now transitioned to a more executive role, reflecting the growing importance of Star Bazaar within Trent Ltd’s strategy. The hypermarket business is positioned as a major growth driver for the company, which also operates popular retail brands like Westside, Zudio, and Zara. P Venkatesalu currently serves as the CEO of Trent Ltd.

Neville Tata is an alumnus of Bayes Business School and joined Trent Ltd. in 2016. He initially led the packaged food and beverages segment before moving on to manage Zudio, a budget fashion brand that has seen rapid expansion and success, solidifying its position among India’s leading apparel brands. According to sources, Noel Tata is expected to closely mentor Neville as he takes charge of Star Bazaar, with a future executive director or CEO role potentially on the horizon.

The Tata family’s next generation is increasingly involved in key businesses across the group. Leah Tata, 39, has recently taken charge of the Gateway brand at Indian Hotels, while Maya Tata, 36, focuses on analytics and technology at Tata Digital. Along with Neville, Leah and Maya have also been inducted as trustees of five trusts affiliated with the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, both major stakeholders in Tata Sons. Noel Tata himself holds significant influence as chairman of Voltas and a trustee of Tata Trusts, which controls a 66% stake in Tata Sons.

Trent Hypermarket, a joint venture between Tata and British retailer Tesco, operates 66 Star Bazaar hyper and supermarkets across the country, underscoring its growing footprint in India’s retail landscape.
