Nokia and Indian Institute of Science partner for PM Modi's 6G Vision
To support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambition of positioning India as a frontrunner in 6G technology, Nokia has revealed a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The partnership aims to conduct joint research on 6G technologies and applications with significant societal implications in India. Operating from Nokia's new 6G Lab in Bengaluru, both entities will focus on three primary research domains: 6G radio technologies, 6G architecture, and the integration of machine learning into the 6G air interface.
In a statement, Nokia mentioned that the partnership will focus on developing reference architectures, software frameworks, and algorithms. The ultimate goal is to contribute their collaborative research to the broader 6G technology and standards landscape. “The importance of India on the global telecommunications stage cannot be overemphasized. We’re proud to work with the brightest minds in Indian science and academia to ensure 6G is a force multiplier for the economy", said Nishant Batra, chief strategy and technology officer at Nokia.
Although their research has global implications, Nokia and IISc will prioritize 6G use cases tailored to address specific needs in India. These use cases encompass endeavors such as enhancing sustainability and energy efficiency in communication systems, bolstering network resilience and reliability for critical communications, and leveraging AI and developing "Network as Sensor" technologies to enhance transportation safety, bolster healthcare services, and expand educational access.
“IISc is very privileged to contribute to India's mission to be a front-line contributor in design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030, as envisioned in the Bharat 6G Vision document released by PM Modi", said professor Govindan Rangarajan, Director, IISc.
In March last year, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Area Office and Innovation Centre during an event at Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi. At the same event, he unveiled the Bharat 6G Vision Document and inaugurated the 6G R&D Test Bed in the country. The Bharat 6G Vision Document outlines India's aspiration to play a leading role in the design, development, and implementation of 6G technology by the year 2030.
