Nxtra Bolsters Green Commitment with 140,208 MWh Renewable Energy Deal
Nxtra, the data centre unit of Bharti Airtel, has entered into a significant agreement with Ampln and Amplus Energy to procure an additional 140,208 MWh (megawatt-hours) of renewable energy. This move reinforces Nxtra's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through renewable sources, aiming to cut nearly 99,547 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) annually.
Under the agreement, AmpIn Energy and Amplus Energy will establish captive solar and wind power plants, contributing 48 MWdc and 24.3 MW, respectively, to power Nxtra's data centres in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha.
This initiative aligns with Nxtra's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2031, solidifying its position as India's largest chain of green data centres. Nxtra is actively working on multiple interventions to eliminate 100% of absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions across its operations by the fiscal year 2031.
Nxtra has already implemented measures to accelerate the adoption of green energy, incorporating energy-efficient infrastructure and processes, and embracing sustainable business practices throughout its workplaces.
As part of its expansion plans, Nxtra by Airtel is set to invest over Rs 5,000 crore in the next few years. This investment aims to build six new hyperscale data centres in key metro cities in India, effectively doubling its capacity to over 400 MW. Nxtra currently operates a vast network of data centres in India, including a dozen large data centres and 120 edge data centres spread across the country.
