Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in Mauritius today for a two-day state visit to engage in talks with the top leadership and is expected to attend the national day ceremonies as the main guest.

He received a warm welcome by the nation's leading leaders in the early hours, and Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam gave him a garland.

Along with other senior officials, he was joined by the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice of Mauritius, Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, Foreign Minister, Cabinet Secretary, and Chairperson of the Grand Port District Council.

The importance of PM Modi's visit was highlighted by the 200 luminaries who attended his welcome, including MPs, MLAs, Diplomatic Corps members, and religious leaders.

During his visit, the PM is expected to sign a number of agreements at the invitation of his Mauritius counterpart, Navin Ramgoolam, to strengthen collaboration in trade, capacity building, and the fight against cross-border financial crimes.

Modi expressed optimism before leaving for Mauritius, saying that his trip will usher in a "new and bright" era in India-Mauritius ties.

Throughout his visit, he will interact with important authorities and political figures, meet with the Prime Minister, and meet with the President of Mauritius.  Along with interacting with the Indian community, he will also officially open the Area Health Center and the Civil Service College, both of which were constructed with grant support from India.

During his two-day official visit to Mauritius, which starts Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil more than 20 projects supported by India, ranging from community-linked infrastructure to capacity building.

In addition, the prime minister will unveil new, significant infrastructure initiatives meant to bolster democracy on the island nation in Southeast Africa.

The Civil Services College building will be jointly inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi and his colleague Navin Ramgoolam of Mauritius.  A total of USD 4.75 million was spent on the building's construction itself.  In 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed for the project.
