A consortium supported by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd, along with leading engineering institutions in India, is poised to unveil its inaugural ChatGPT-style service next month, marking a significant stride in India's AI aspirations. Developed in partnership with Indian Institute of Technology campuses and supported by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, this initiative underscores India's burgeoning presence in the artificial intelligence landscape.

This marks a significant stride for India in the rapidly evolving competition to cultivate groundbreaking AI innovations. BharatGPT anticipates its model functioning across 11 local languages and targeting four key sectors: healthcare, governance, financial services, and education. Developed in partnership with Indian Institute of Technology campuses, notably in Bombay, and supported by wireless carrier Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd and the Indian government, this initiative underscores a concerted effort to harness AI's transformative potential.

Additional startups like Sarvam and Krutrim, supported by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Vinod Khosla’s fund, are likewise developing open-source AI models tailored for the Indian market. “It’s a different genre of LLMs", said Ganesh Ramakrishnan, chair of IIT Bombay’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The AI model, named Hanooman, aims to enhance user-friendliness by providing speech-to-text capabilities to users.

Reliance Jio plans to develop tailored models for specific purposes. Already in progress is Jio Brain, a platform designed to leverage AI capabilities across its extensive network of approximately 450 million subscribers. Leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs), these systems learn from extensive datasets to produce responses that sound natural. This approach capitalizes on generative AI, a newer form of artificial intelligence made prominent by the achievements of OpenAI's ChatGPT.
