Sony Acquires Marvel's Spider Man Developer Insomniac Games Studio

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), a multinational video game & digital entertainment company, ventures into a definitive agreements with Insomniac Games, an American video game developer. Post the acquisition, Insomniac Games will join the global development operations of SIE Worldwide Studios (SIE WWS). Insomniac Games would be the 14th studio to join the SIE WWS family.

Shawn Layden, Chairman, SIE WWS states, “Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in class storytelling and game play is unparalleled,” he adds, “we have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.”

Insomniac Games is an award winning studio, which recently in partnership with SIE and Marvel Games launched Play station 4’s top selling Marvel’s Spider Man. This game was 2018’s most highly acclaimed PS4 games and was sold nearly 13.2 million copies worldwide as of July 28, 2019.Insomniac Games’ other
most successful franchise includes Spryo the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance.

Insomniac Games has a signature storytelling method by infusing humor and highly interactive worlds. For its collaborative workplace culture, the studio has acquired about 20 awards since 2005. The relationship between SIE and Insomniac Games is spanning for more than 20 years now. This acquisition is further expected to enhance the creative force within SIE WWS and formally adds the studio to the play Station family. The Insomniac Games’ operations post the acquisition would be run by the current management team in conjunction with the SIE WWS San Mateo Studio. Completion of the acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and certain other closing conditions.
