SSESSE and EET Hydrogen have announced a strategic partnership to develop a 40MWe green hydrogen production facility at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The project, named Gowy Green Hydrogen, aims to accelerate industrial decarbonization in the North West by supplying green hydrogen to local industries.

As part of the UK’s broader strategy to achieve 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030, the facility is expected to be operational by 2028. Feasibility studies have been completed, and design and site investigations are currently underway. The companies plan to submit a planning application by 2025, with a final investment decision expected thereafter.

Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, said, “Our mission is to lead the UK’s low-carbon hydrogen sector, and Gowy Green Hydrogen is a significant addition to our existing flagship HPP1 and HPP2 projects. Partnering with SSE allows us to contribute to the region’s leadership in decarbonizing both industry and power”.

Hannah Bronwin, Director of Business Development for SSE Thermal, added, “Green hydrogen production is essential for decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries and advancing the clean energy transition. Gowy Green Hydrogen will play a vital role in securing much-needed hydrogen capacity in a region already pioneering the shift to low-carbon energy”.

The Gowy Green Hydrogen project represents a significant milestone in the UK’s efforts to create a cleaner power system and help industries that are challenging to decarbonise. SSE, a leader in clean energy solutions, is deeply involved in hydrogen initiatives, including the production of both green and blue hydrogen, hydrogen storage, and hydrogen power generation.

This collaboration underscores the commitment of both companies to fostering a sustainable, low-carbon energy future in the UK.
