Tata's $5 Billion Gigafactory in Bridgwater Boosts UK's EV Transition
Tata Group revealed that it has selected Bridgwater in southwest England as the location for its new multibillion-pound battery manufacturing facility. This £4 billion ($5 billion) plant, situated in Somerset county, will mark Tata's inaugural gigafactory outside of India. Agratas, the global battery arm of Tata Group, confirmed the establishment of the 40 GWh factory at Bridgwater's Gravity Smart Campus.
The UK facility, announced by Tata in July and set to be one of Europe's largest battery-cell manufacturing sites, is anticipated to generate around 4,000 green-tech jobs in the region. Agratas emphasized that this investment will not only contribute to Britain's transition to electric mobility but will also indirectly create 'many thousands' of additional jobs.
Agratas CEO Tom Flack stated, "Our multibillion-pound investment will bring state-of-the-art technology to Somerset, helping to supercharge Britain's transition to electric mobility whilst creating thousands of jobs in the process".
The construction of the gigafactory will occur in stages, with battery production scheduled to commence in 2026, according to the statement. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Tata Motors are slated to be the initial customers for the batteries produced at this facility. This strategic move aligns with Tata Group's commitment to advancing the electric vehicle market and fostering job growth in the green-tech sector.
