TPG Nambiar, Founder of BPL Group, Passes Away at 94
TP Gopalan Nambiar, the pioneering Founder of BPL Group, passed away peacefully at his Bengaluru residence on Thursday at the age of 94. Known fondly as TPG, Nambiar was a stalwart of India’s consumer electronics industry. He was the father-in-law of BJP leader and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “It is with great sadness that I inform you all about the passing away of my father-in-law TPG Nambiar, Chairman BPL Group. Om Shanti. He was a true visionary and built one of India's most trusted consumer brands that remains popular to this day”.
Nambiar had been unwell for some time, and his passing has evoked tributes from prominent figures, including former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who said, “Saddened by the passing of Shri TPG Nambiar, founder of the iconic BPL brand, who has been a close acquaintance for a long time. Shri Nambiar’s enormous contributions and legacy will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his loved ones”.
TPG Nambiar launched BPL (British Physical Laboratories) in 1963, steering the company into the consumer electronics market where it became a household name in the 1980s and 1990s. Initially specializing in batteries, telecommunication equipment, and medical devices, BPL diversified extensively, later gaining prominence in the television market. As India liberalized its economy in the 1990s, BPL competed against global giants entering the Indian market. At its peak, the brand commanded over 15 percent of the television market and was regarded as a trusted Indian alternative to multinational brands.
However, the company’s success began to falter due to family disputes, diversification into unrelated sectors, and growing competition from South Korean companies such as LG and Samsung. A series of financial challenges led to BPL’s decline in market share and influence.
Despite these setbacks, Nambiar’s legacy as an industry visionary endures. Under his leadership, BPL became a trusted household name, symbolizing quality and reliability for Indian consumers. His contributions to India’s electronics sector will be remembered as foundational in shaping the industry’s trajectory.
