UnionUnion Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has highlighted a significant milestone in the ongoing petroleum refinery project in Barmer, Rajasthan, noting the installation of a crucial infrastructure component.

In a social media post on 'X', the minister announced that the dome roof of a Propylene Double Wall Tank had been successfully airlifted and positioned at the Barmer site. This tank, designed to store hazardous and special chemicals at temperatures up to 200°F, features an inner tank for the chemicals and an outer tank that provides a protective barrier. The dome roof, weighing a total of 435 metric tons including the suspended deck and balancing weights, marks a major engineering accomplishment.

"This is how India's energy sector is shaping up for the future under the dynamic leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji", Minister Puri stated, underscoring the project's significance for India's energy sector.

The Greenfield Refinery cum Petrochemical Complex in Barmer is being developed by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Government of Rajasthan (GOR), with respective stakes of 74% and 26%. Originally conceived in 2008 and approved in 2013, the project was reconfigured and work began in 2018 under the Prime Minister's leadership.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the HRRL refinery complex will process 9 million metric tons per annum (MMTPA) of crude oil and produce over 2.4 million tons of petrochemicals annually, which will significantly reduce India's import bills for petrochemicals. The project is expected to act as a catalyst for an industrial hub in western Rajasthan and help India achieve its goal of 450 MMTPA refining capacity by 2030.

Additionally, the project aims to enhance India's self-reliance by substituting imports of petrochemicals, currently amounting to Rs 95,000 crore. Upon commissioning, the complex is projected to cut the import bill by Rs 26,000 crore.

The project has also generated significant employment, directly engaging around 35,000 workers within the complex and approximately 100,000 workers indirectly. The successful installation of the Propylene Double Wall Tank dome roof represents a critical advancement in the development of this landmark project.
