Kristie Canegallo, the senior official assuming the responsibilities of the Deputy Secretary at the US Department of Homeland Security, is set to travel to India on February 27th to participate in the US-India Homeland Security Dialogue. The dialogue is slated for February 28th. During her visit from February 27th to 29th, Canegallo will co-chair the security dialogue alongside Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, as announced by the US Department of Homeland Security.
The objective of the Homeland Security Dialogue is to enhance the strategic alliance between the United States and India on various security matters of mutual significance. Additionally, she will engage in discussions with several senior officials from the Indian government, as informed by the US Department of Homeland Security. The agenda of the security dialogue will encompass subjects such as counterterrorism, cybersecurity, aviation security, and addressing concerns related to Sikh radicals, among other topics.
The upcoming dialogue is expected to cover a range of topics including cooperation in counterterrorism, cybersecurity, addressing illegal migration, extradition, aviation security, protecting global supply chains, and maritime security, among other areas of interest. The previous homeland security dialogue occurred in January 2022. Sources indicate that discussions during the upcoming dialogue may touch upon matters related to Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and various fugitives currently residing in the United States.
It is anticipated that India will prioritize addressing concerns regarding the utilization of the digital realm by terrorist groups to propagate radical ideologies, recruit members, and fund terrorist activities. Additionally, India will highlight the critical issue of cyberattacks targeting its vital infrastructure, such as banks, railways, power plants, energy facilities, and hospitals. This meeting holds significance as it offers another avenue for India to bring these issues to the attention of the United States.
