InIn a notable advancement of academia-industry collaboration, Volvo Group India and BMS College of Engineering (BMSCE) officially opened the BMSCE-Volvo Group Centre for Flexible Material Research in Basavanagudi today. This state-of-the-art facility was established following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two organizations in 2023.

The Centre aims to spearhead innovative research in flexible material testing, a key aspect of Volvo's ongoing digital transformation efforts. Outfitted with advanced Flexible Material Testing Rigs, the lab will focus on analyzing the performance of various cables and hoses, including high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) cables and critical safety components. The Centre’s specialized testing machines covering Axial, Bending, Torsional, and a unique Simulation Co-relation Rig will significantly improve Volvo’s research and testing accuracy.

While BMSCE will lead academic initiatives in the field, Volvo Group will leverage the facility for in-depth internal research. Kamal Bali, President and Managing Director of Volvo Group India, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, saying, "Our partnership with BMSCE underscores our focus on innovation, talent development, and research that is vital to our sustainability efforts".

Maria Ebbesson, Site Chairperson of Volvo Group Technology (GTT) India, noted, "This Centre exemplifies our commitment to closing the gap between academia and industry. Each innovation here will drive us closer to achieving our strategic objectives and advancing material science".

The Centre is expected to be a pivotal space for research, benefiting both the academic and industrial sectors.
